An untested backup is a hypothesis
Almost every business that loses data had backups. What they did not have was a restore anyone had performed recently. Jobs report success while silently skipping a database that is locked. Retention quietly rolls off the copy you needed. The only way to know is to restore something and watch it come back.
The Microsoft 365 gap catches people too. Microsoft protects its own infrastructure, not your data from your own users — a deleted mailbox or a ransomware-encrypted SharePoint library is yours to recover, and the default retention is shorter than most people assume.
